How Does This Work?

You create a free account and set a Gmail filter to forward your Ingress email damage reports.

The damage reports are processed in realtime into the Outgress analytics and alerting engine.

That's the short version.

Is This Allowed?

We believe so, but you decide.

Resolved Mail forward not possible - Google awaits confirmation mail

Discussion in 'Bugs' started by DieWebLaus, Mar 26, 2016.

  1. Hi guys,

I setup mail forwarding and checked all settings. GMail needs an approval mail / code to verify that a forward is allowed. I used as described "damage@outgress.com" as the forward mail address. But Google is insisting that this was never verified. I even used se resent email button to generate another request to your address some times. No luck.

Please verify for my address jwesemann@googlemail.com (the old German naming scheme for GMail becuase of legal issues in the past).

I show 2 forwarding request emails from Google were sent recently (as in the last hour), but the logs show both were confirmed. Are you 100% certain that Google is still saying you need a confirmation code?

  3. Yes, just re-checked again. I attached a current partial screen shoot from my GMail settings. It asks fo a code and is not showing the address in the dropdown listbox for using it in a filter.

Interface is of course in German :)

    regards
    Jörg

Actually, I think I see what was going on. The system was extracting the wrong confirmation URL out of the email because for some reason the email was encoded differently than normal confirmation emails (maybe a variance with googlemail.com possibly)?

I just applied some changes that should take that into account now. If you want to go ahead and try again and let me know, I would be interested to know to make sure it's working now (I can't trigger a confirm email with the different encoding on my end unfortunately).

  5. I triggered to send it again. Being a IT guy for 35 years not i am interested to see the exact meaning of your statement "dencoded differentyl". may I ask you to explain?

    For whatever reason the confirmation emails you triggered were coming in as "Quoted-Printable" encoding, while all others have always *not* been and were instead just normal ASCII. It might have something to do with the email itself being in German and certain characters within the message trigger the "Quoted Printable" mode or something... not entirely sure to be honest. I would *think* it wouldn't be necessary because the whole thing is Unicode (UTF-8) already. But who knows... {shrug}

Either way, I just added some code that will check for quoted printable emails and decode them if needed, rather than assuming they don't need to be decoded like before.

More info on Quoted Printable here:

Did it work for you after you triggered it again? It shouldn't require any sort of wait really... if you reload the page and the prompt for the confirmation code went away, you should be good to go.

  8. Of course ASCII is "not normal" for 90% of the world since decades because we are having more characters on the keyboard compared to US/UK guys. ;)

May I assume you are US located or at least not based in a country with öäüßÖÄÜ to type

I am suffering from lets call it "restricted cultural view" within IT especially from programmers not working in an international context from day 1 in 1982 - My firstname is "Jörg" it even in the 21st century some programs are throwing exceptions if I put this into an input box ... :(

But back to the real topic: It worked and forwarding is active. Not sure if GMail supports using a filter on archived mails - is it ok to process my 2500 archived damage report mails without overloading your system?

    CU and thanks
    Jörg

Ya, I'm in the US, but I deal with International stuff all the time. I was just an oversight on my part for the confirmation emails (the normal damage report emails already handled Quoted-Printable stuff just fine). That's why it only took about 15 seconds to fix because once I saw the confirmation email you triggered, I saw that it was Quoted-Printable. :)

We did some testing with everyone I knew in other countries and it all worked in those countries, but those were more vanilla character set languages (Spanish, French, etc.), so...

Gmail does not allow forwarding archived emails (probably for good reason since you could use at as a spam attack vector pretty easily... just get a Gmail account with a million emails and forward them all to whoever you want to be annoying. haha)

BUT... Outgress *does* allow you to import your historical email damage reports just fine. Once it gets the first email damage report from you, you will get an email from the system basically saying that it has determined your faction. Within that email, it will also give you a link to import historical email damage reports if you have any archived. The reason it requires the first damage report to come in is because I could see users getting confused thinking all they needed to do was "import" their damage report emails and then later wondering why new stuff wasn't coming in for them. :)

The import feature works quite nice and a bunch of users have imported more than 50,000 historical damage report emails without any issues (I think the most I saw one user import was around 120,000). It's nice when new users can instantly just add all the portals and attack history like that.

  10. Thanks again, yes your resoultion time was extremely fast :)

I will wait for todays damage reports (not sure if any will come in soon). To prepare the mentioned import feature: In which format do you expect the import data? Do you have a How2 doc describing it?

and BTW: A happy easter from Germany !

The import doesn't require you to prepare or do anything special on your end really. It uses a OAuth2 approval to your Gmail account (which it revokes from itself when it's finished). It uses a Gmail search filter to find them and then grab them and process them into the system. The Gmail filter it uses is, "from:ingress-support subject:ingress damage report".

It doesn't use the full domain of the from address because that way the old ones from google.com still some in. And I *believe* all ingress damage reports come in in English, even if the game is played in another language. I didn't check every single language, but I checked a few... Spanish, French, Russian, Chinese, etc. all triggered English damage report emails. If that ends up not being the case and you have damage report emails in a different language, let me know and I can add support for them fairly easily... but it was my understanding the the damage report emails always came in English regardless.

Besides it just being easier for users (as in just click a button), another reason it needs to get the emails itself is data integrity... if you allow users to import data directly that it can't verify actually came from Niantic in an unaltered state, you would get all sorts of jokers trying to import invalid data. The system verifies that the emails originated from Niantic and have been unaltered by using the DKIM stuff.

...and now it's time for bed for me. :)

Before I go digging, I just want to make sure you aren't expecting a confirmation email on your end. You aren't supposed to get one, the system auto-confirms the forward request.

So your forward request if you look at your settings is still requesting a confirm code?

hello, yes you are right, I dont wait for code, but in gmail its still has status: waiting for confirmation code...

upd: just try to resend request for confirmation code, still nothing...

I just double checked the email logs, and we didn't receive any confirmation request email on this end. Can you double check to make 100% certain that you entered the forwarding email address correctly? It should be:

    damage@outgress.com

Honestly I'm not really sure what the issue is... We aren't getting a confirmation email from Google at all. But I know they are sending them in general because we have gotten numerous in the last 24 hours.

Maybe Gmail is glitching somehow. Could you try deleting the forwarding email in your Gmail settings and re-add it?

We got the one you sent as a test, but nothing from Gmail as far as the forwarding request... hmmm... Do you have a time that we could coordinate where you could test something specific?
